Pizza Making at Green School Bali

On Friday, 29 May and Saturday, 30 May, Green School was honored and delighted by a visit from two of Indonesia’s most talented pizza makers, Chef Maurizio and Chef Putra from Bali and Lombok’s renowned Lotus restaurants. They came to fulfill a prize awarded to Green School’s 3rd and 4th graders, who won a pizza party by selling more tickets than any other class to the school’s monthly full moon Mepantigan performance.

Our guest chefs patiently explained the steps necessary to making the perfect pie, from rolling the dough to create a thin crust with just the right combination of chewiness and crispiness, to choosing the freshest ingredients for toppings. Luckily, we had plenty of these to choose from directly out of Green School’s organic gardens: tomatoes, basil, peppers, eggplants, pineapples and more.

With that, Green School’s own budding culinary artists went at it and tried to outdo each other in making the tastiest possible pizza. They were helped by the school’s very own brick oven, heated to very high temperatures using bamboo as fuel. Although it was originally designed to bake bread, all participants agreed that it is actually much better suited as a pizza oven: the results certainly bear out that opinion, as the pizza was delicious.

After eating their fill (and then some), it turned out that Chef Maurizio’s generosity was still overflowing, and the students were treated to several tubs of Lotus’s homemade ice cream. Happy kids, indeed!

And apparently happy chefs as well: the next day Maurizio and Putra were kind enough to come back and host another pizza party for Green School families and guests who spent the morning working on the 7th and 8th grade clubhouse construction project. These volunteers were certainly well-rewarded for their efforts.
